Cause & Spread:

  • Rat fever, or leptospirosis, is spread through bacteria found in the urine of rats and other animals like pigs, cattle, and dogs.
  • It spreads by contact with contaminated water, which can enter the body through the eyes, mouth, or cuts on the skin.

  • Cleaning water tanks at home
  • Using water from canals/tanks to wash or bathe

  • Avoid walking barefoot in areas suspected of rat presence; wear boots or protective footwear.
  • Avoid using water from canals, rivers, lakes, ponds, and other stagnant sources.
  • Cover any wounds before engaging in activities like farming.
  • Farmers should consider taking doxycycline (with medical guidance) two weeks before and during the farming period.

  • Headache, fever, vomiting, stomach ache, or eye color change can be signs of rat fever. Seek medical help immediately if these occur.
