- All the bleeding will stop. Eventually.
- Always keep notes.
- Be confident. You meet a lot of new people during your lifetime as a nurse.
- Befriend with every single nursing aide you meet. They are the backbone of this profession.
- Committing mistakes is normal. That only means you’re learning.
- Empathy is one key to earning your patients’ trust.
- Get used to being tired. The lack of sleep doesn’t stop once you graduate.
- If it moves, rattles, shakes, falls down, or won’t stay in place, tape it.
- If you don’t know something, look it up.
- Invest on a good pair of comfortable shoes.
- Learn to do two or three things, at the same time.
- Never apologize for doing your job.
- Never be afraid to ask for help.
- Never cry in front of a physician. They’re not worth it..
- Never forget that you are caring for a fellow human being.
- Never forget what this first year feels like. Once you move forward in your career, help the next generation.
- Never forget your pen when doing rounds.
- Never get distracted when you have medications at hand.
- Never take it personally when someone yells at you. That’s normal.
- Never take your bad day out on your patients.
- Never underestimate the power of a few kind words.
- Nursing is a 24-hour job; do not expect to get it all done in one shift.
- Patients should always be your top priority.
- Respect people no matter where they come from or what illnesses they have.
- Take the time to auscultate well.
- What you consider an emergency and what the general public considers an emergency are two very different things.
- You must to learn how to eat fast.
- You must to learn how to walk fast.
- Your intention to help should be clear and genuine.
- Your shift will end soon, no matter how toxic it is.
