A Cuban boy who had a 10 lb tumor on his face which was the size of a basketball has died after having surgery to remove it.
The 14 year old from Cuba underwent surgery last week in a Miami hospital. But he tragically died after suffering lung and kidney failure after the successful removal.
Emanuel Zayas was born with polyostotic fibrous dyspepsia, a genetic bone disorder that caused the growth.
The disorder had crippled his leg, softened his skull bone and caused the tumor.
The operation was expected to last 10 hours and required four surgeons. Emanuel's mother, Melvin Vizaino, previously said: "As parents. we've kept fighting every moment."
They had hoped Emanuel would undergo reconstruction after the surgery but sadly it did not make it that far.
Doctors at the Holtz Children's Hospital at Jackson Memorial in Miami said his family plans to donate his body to science so more can be learnt about the disease.
