Cancer is caused by changes to certain genes that alter the way our cells function. Some of these genetic changes occur naturally when DNA is replicated during the process of cell division. But others are the result of environmental exposures that damage DNA.
These agents may be biological (specific viruses or bacteria), physical (ultraviolet light, x-rays) or chemical.
Factors contribute to cancer
- Age
- Alcohol
- Hormones
- Radiation
- Sunlight
- Tobacco
- Certain chemicals and other substances
- Some viruses and bacteria
- Family history of cancer
- Poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight
Over time, several factors may act together to cause normal cells to become cancerous. keep in mind Having one or more risk factors does not mean that you will get cancer. Most people who have risk factors never develop cancer. Some people are more sensitive than others to the known risk factors.
