- Cholesterol is a type of fat (lipid) in your blood. Cells need cholesterol, and the body makes all it needs. In addition you get cholesterol from the food you eat.
- Cholesterol is oil-based and so does not mix with the blood, which is water-based.So Cholesterol is carried around the body by lipoproteins in the blood.
- The parcels of cholesterol are carried by two types of lipoproteins
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol)is known as ‘Bad’ cholesterol
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol) is known as ‘Good’ cholesterol
- HDL caries excess cholesterol in blood back to liver where they broken down and romoved from body.
- LDL caries cholesterol to cells. But when you have too much LDL, it can build up in artery walls, causing them narrow. This Reduce the blood flow, which can be bad for heart health.
